Oriole Orange Swiss Chard is a visually striking and versatile addition to any garden, recognized for its vibrant orange stems and deep green leaves. This variety adds a pop of color to garden beds and dishes alike, with its mild, slightly earthy flavor that is similar to spinach. Its tender leaves and crunchy stems make it perfect for fresh salads, sautéing, or as a colorful garnish to brighten up your meals.

To successfully grow Oriole Orange Swiss Chard from seed, begin by selecting a site with well-drained, fertile soil and full sun exposure. Before planting, prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve its nutrient content and structure. Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost date, spacing them about 0.5 inches deep and 2 inches apart in rows that are 18-24 inches apart. Ensure consistent moisture during germination, which typically takes 7-14 days.

As the seedlings emerge, thin them to stand 6-12 inches apart, allowing enough space for their broad leaves to spread. Maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells, as Swiss chard thrives in consistently moist soil. Mulching around the plants can help conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil temperature. Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to support vigorous growth and maintain the plant’s nutrient levels.

Once the plants reach a height of 4-6 inches, begin harvesting outer leaves, ensuring that the plant’s center remains intact for continued growth. Swiss chard can tolerate light frost, so it can be grown as a cool-season crop in warmer regions or an all-season crop in cooler areas. Monitor for pests like leaf miners and aphids, treating them organically with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
